We try our best to cater for people of all ages and abilities, including those with physical, learning and sensory impairments. It was a dream come true for us to host the English Adaptive Surf Championships here at the start of July for the second year running: it was an incredibly special day for us all.
We want everyone to be able to enjoy The Wave and we are big supporters of adaptive surfing, and work hard to provide an accessible surf experience for as many people as we can.
The term ‘Adaptive Surfing’ refers to those with additional needs or challenges, such as those with a disability, that require extra assistance, specialised equipment or an adapted surfing experience to match their abilities.
We are working to develop our adaptive booking process and experience, and at this stage ask anyone interested in adaptive surfing at The Wave to get in touch to discuss the individual or group wishing to surf.
Blue badge holders can be issued with a disabled parking pass upon arrival at the Gatehouse. Parking spots do not need to be pre-booked.
There are disabled toilets located around our site and we also have changing rooms fitted with a seated shower for after your surf.
How To Book
Please fill in this self-assesment form. We will require additional information on the individuals disability or additional needs before any booking is arranged, to ensure we can fully deliver a great experience, with the appropriate support and equipment. Please also reference any preferred dates/times, ensuring it is at least 3 weeks’ notice.
We ask that anyone wishing to surf with us has a degree of water confidence and that you consider the risks and challenges, as well as the amazing opportunities and benefits, that an action sport such as surfing can have. For additional general information about The Wave and our accessibility please see our FAQs.
Adaptive Surf Club
What is it?
We are launching our first ever Adaptive Surf Club in 2022. We believe that it is important to remove barriers to people being able to try surfing and we want to support and grow the UK’s adaptive surfing community. Our aim is to run an adaptive session once a month, which offers people the chance to have a go at adaptive surfing in a safe and supported environment.
Who is it for?
The sessions are a taster for those who have no, or very little, surfing experience but really want to give it a go. They are not aimed at experienced adaptive surfers. We will have limited places on each Adaptive Surf Club session.
What is the cost?
We are raising funds to run the Adaptive Surf Club, so there is no cost to the surfer. We are however asking people to apply for a place. Successful applicants will receive one taster session on one of the Adaptive Surf Club dates. We are planning to run at least one Adaptive Surf Club session a month outside of the school holidays.
What is the application process?
Anyone interested in taking part in an Adaptive Surf Club session needs to complete and submit this form. Completing it does not guarantee a place, but all applications will be reviewed, and the team will let you know if you have made it on to one of the monthly sessions.
