Cold Water Dip at The Wave in aid of St Peter’s Hospice

On Saturday 28 November, St Peter’s Hospice is holding a Cold Water Dip at The Wave, from 11:00am to 1:00pm. The waves will be running, it’s a swim rather than a surf, and spectators are welcome to watch from the side.

Entry is £20 per person and is booked through the hospice. The fee covers the cost of running the event, so the money that supports the hospice’s patients and their families comes from what dippers raise on top. The hospice asks each dipper to aim for £125.

The hospice is running a second dip at Portishead Open Air Pool on Sunday 29 November. You can book either day, or both for £35.

JOHN'S STORY

"The St Peters team were amazing, I don’t know how I would have coped without them.

If you are a carer you'll know just how hard it is.

There are days and long nights where you just think you can't carry on providing the love and care your loved one so deserves. When I knew the worse was to come and I could no longer cope, St Peter's stepped in and offered me some much needed respite care. They would talk to mum when she was awake, give her lunch and personal care – just all-round care which was fantastic.

The Cold Water Dip at The Wave earlier this year felt like a celebration - to dip in the icy cold water and the magical waves surrounded by so much love in and out of the water.

I can't think of a better way to celebrate life and our loved ones we hold so close to our hearts and to thank all the wonderful team at St Peter's, my angels."

Making the Most of Shorter Days

One of the most effective ways to combat the winter blues is to maximise daylight exposure. Waking up early and spending time outdoors, even for a short while, can significantly boost your mood and energy levels.

It's also fun to embrace the darkness and hibernate with indoor activities you love, such as reading, cooking and meditation.

Eating Seasonally in Winter

Fuel your body during the winter months with warming foods like soups, stews and curries. Tasty and nutritious root vegetables such as potatoes, carrots and parsnips are abundant in November so stock up! It's also important to make sure you're getting enough immune-boosting foods such as citrus fruits, garlic, and ginger.

The Benefits of Cold Water

Cold water immersion, whether swimming or surfing, has a growing following for its physical and mental health benefits. Many people report better circulation, less muscle soreness and improved mood and alertness from regular exposure. We don’t currently offer swimming sessions, but surfing at The Wave puts you in the water in much the same way.

At The Wave, we want to make your winter surfing experience as comfortable as possible. We provide thick winter wetsuits, boots, and gloves. With our new lake lighting, we can also extend your day with surf sessions going on well into the evening.

With winter taking up a quarter of the year, every year, why not try and make the most of it. Prioritise rest and relaxation during the darker hours, and when the sun does shine, get outside and enjoy the fresh air.
