Surf and Stay at The Wave Bristol: What to Pack and How to Stay Warm

There's something different about spending more than a few hours at The Wave. Instead of rushing to fit everything into one visit, staying a little longer gives you time to slow down. A surf, good food, watching other people catch waves, waking up the next day ready to do it all again.

Staying at The Wave

There are a few accommodation options at The Wave, The Field (which opened in summer 2026 and is open throughout the summer) is a cost effective place to camp right at The Wave. Pitch your own tent, bring the campervan, or stay in one of our pre-pitched bell tents. Or we have The Camp, with glamping style safari tents, ideal for families, couples or groups of friends. Our safari tents are kitted out with comfortable beds, a kitchenette, woodburners, private toilet and a large balcony. A short walk away from the surf lake. However you arrive, a little planning turns a good day into a great trip. Here's our guide to getting it right, with a few tips from our friends at Dryrobe® on staying warm and comfortable along the way.

Why stay overnight

Waking up a short walk from the waves changes the shape of a trip. No early alarm, no traffic, no checking the forecast on the drive over. Being outdoors and around water for longer gives you the chance to properly switch off, to relax, reconnect and get more out of the health benefits that come with time in and around the lake.

"A full 'day and stay' trip is the ultimate outdoor escape, guaranteed waves right on your doorstep by day, and a cosy night under the stars by night. It captures our ethos of getting people outside, active, and living in the moment." Nick Rees, Global Partnerships Manager at Dryrobe®

What to pack

The obvious kit is easy to remember: wetsuit, towel, swimwear. It's the smaller things that make the difference between a good stay and a great one.

  • The pre and post surf game changer - The classic Dryrobe® Advance functions as your personal, wearable shelter.
  • A towelling robe - like the Dryrobe® organic cotton version, is a lightweight, incredibly soft, and ultra-absorbent option
  • A warm jumper and dry socks for before and after your session
  • Comfortable clothes to change into
  • A separate bag for wet kit, so it stays away from everything else
  • A reusable water bottle to keep you hydrated between sessions
  • Footwear that's easy to slip on once you're out of the water

Forgotten something? Everything on this list, including the Dryrobe® range, is available in The Wave shop.

Staying warm between sessions

Camp life means more time outside, so what you wear between sessions matters as much as what you surf in. Our own lifeguards, coaches and Wavemaker hosts rely on the same kind of kit day to day.

"Dryrobe® has been a fundamental part of our team's kit since we first opened our doors. Whether it's our lifeguards stationed at the lake edge, our coaches or our Wavemaker hosts, their products provide the unbeatable warmth and durability required to handle the elements. It's an essential piece of gear for anyone looking to maximise their time in and around the water." Ellen McNeelance, Partnerships Manager at The Wave

A changing robe, such as the Dryrobe® Advance, works well for this: weatherproof on the outside, with a soft lining underneath, and enough room to get out of a wet wetsuit without the usual scramble under a towel.

For shorter trips to and from the shower block, something lighter does the job. A towelling robe, like Dryrobe®'s organic cotton version, is easy to throw on and just as good for sitting outside the tent as the sun goes down.

Packing smart for camp

Space is tight when you're loading a car or van, so it's worth thinking about how things pack down, not just what you're bringing. A changing robe folded into a Dryrobe® Cushion Cover, for instance, doubles as a camp pillow - fleece on one side, water-resistant on the other, instead of taking up half a duffel bag on its own.

Before you go

A surf and stay break rewards a bit of forward planning: pack for the in-between moments, not just the surf itself, and you'll get more out of the time at both ends of your session.
